Seven-axis Bumotec s191 turn-mill centre is being demonstrated at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, 6 July 2017.

An open invitation is extended to companies interested in profitable one-hit machining of small workpieces to view Starrag UK’s seven-axis Bumotec s191 linear CNC multi-function turn-mill centre being put through its paces at the AMRC with Boeing Centre on Thursday 6 July 2017.

Visitors to the day-long event at Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Park will see first-hand the seven-axis Bumotec s191’s capabilities for grinding, gearcutting and broaching as well as turning and milling in a single set-up as part of a live, complex component machining demonstration.

The event – which is also supported by Jemtech, Kyocera and Kyocera SGS – will appeal to everyone in the micro-mechanic, aerospace, medical technology or luxury goods sectors, for example, and involved in achieving cost-effective, highly accurate (to +/- 2.5 microns) machining solutions within an X, Y and Z axes range of 410 mm, 200 mm and 400 mm, respectively.

“The Bumotec s191 gives us opportunities to develop revolutionary new machining processes in any material and for any sector,” says Dr David Curtis, Technical Fellow at the AMRC with Boeing Centre. “We are now looking for projects where we can take small, complex components and develop optimised, cost-saving solutions that add value to UK industry.”

The Swiss-built machine’s linear drives and high-level thermal stabilisation contribute to such extreme machining accuracies. In addition, its main spindle is complemented by a sub-spindle that can turn in both horizontal and vertical planes, for multi-process/tasking routines.

Tool magazine options extend to up to 90 pockets, to enhance single set-up operations on a machine with a bar capacity of 32, 50 or 65 mm. Rapid traverse rates of 50 m/min and a 30,000 or 40,000 revs/min spindle speed also contribute to the machine’s fast cycle times.
